Site overview
Szyb V is a ventilation shaft of Kopalnia Węgla Kamiennego Staszic, located north of the main shaft complex in the area of the former Zuzanna colony in Katowice's Osiedle Paderewskiego-Muchowiec district, on Aleja Murckowska. It was one of three ventilation and materials shafts — numbered III, IV and V — sunk as part of the mine-building programme during the mid-1960s. Szyb V has a depth of 571 metres and was already serving a ventilation function at the time the mine was formally opened for production on 20 July 1964.
The mine reached peak output of 4.6 million tonnes in 1988. After successive mergers, KWK Staszic became part of KWK Murcki-Staszic in 2010 and KWK Staszic-Wujek in 2021. Szyb V continues as an active ventilation shaft of the Ruch Murcki-Staszic.
The shaft is set in a small hollow and is not prominently visible from surrounding areas.

History
Kopalnia Węgla Kamiennego Staszic was conceived in 1956–1957 when the unexploited Reserve mining field at Giszowiec was identified as a site for a new colliery. The mine design was approved on 5 February 1958 and the Giszowiec mining area of 11.987 km² was established on 2 October 1958. The state enterprise KWK Staszic w budowie was formally constituted on 1 January 1959, with shaft sinking starting on 3 January 1959.
Szyb V, with a depth of 571 metres, was sunk as one of three peripheral ventilation and materials shafts (III, IV, V) constructed during the mine-building phase. It is located north of the main shafts I and II, in the district known as Osiedle Paderewskiego-Muchowiec, in the area of the former Zuzanna colony, with its surface address on Aleja Murckowska. According to sources, the mine was formally opened using a structure based on Shaft II as the intake shaft and Szyb V as the ventilation shaft for the initial 500-metre extraction level.
The mine was officially handed over for production on 20 July 1964. Output grew steadily in subsequent years; the 720-metre level was commissioned on 5 December 1970. Peak production of 4.6 million tonnes was achieved in 1988.
Szyb III was liquidated in 2004. In June 1993 KWK Staszic became part of Katowicki Holding Węglowy. On 1 January 2010 it merged with KWK Murcki to form KWK Murcki-Staszic.
On 1 April 2017 the enterprise was transferred to Polska Grupa Górnicza, and on 1 January 2021 it merged with KWK Wujek to form KWK Staszic-Wujek. Szyb V remains among the three active ventilation shafts of the Ruch Murcki-Staszic, together with Szyb IV and Szyb Zygmunt. The shaft complex lies in a small topographic hollow and is largely concealed from the surrounding landscape by tree cover.
