Site overview

The Südschacht, located near Walpershofen in the Gemeinde Heusweiler, is a hard coal ventilation shaft that was sunk by the Grube Ensdorf as its own surface Anlage after the earlier reactivated Schacht Dilsburg had served its purpose. The Heusweiler Bergwerke information notes that the Grube Ensdorf, having used the Schacht Dilsburg as a Wetterschacht from 1965 as its workings reached Heusweiler, later erected the Südschacht as its own facility near Niedersalbach. The Südschacht is listed in the final mine infrastructure of the Bergwerk Saar as an ausziehender Wetterschacht serving the former Ensdorf field.

The broader Bergwerk Saar was formed on 1 January 2004 from the merger of Bergwerk Warndt/Luisenthal and Bergwerk Ensdorf. Coal production at the Bergwerk Saar ended in June 2012. The Südschacht, listed alongside Schacht Primsmulde (Nalbach) and the Schrägschacht Barbarastollen as one of the ventilation and transport elements of the Bergwerk Saar, was closed with the end of production.

Set in a mixed suburban and wooded landscape near Walpershofen, the shaft site reads as a small and functional outlying remnant of the former coalfield.

History

The Südschacht near Walpershofen in Heusweiler was sunk as an ausziehender Wetterschacht for the Grube Ensdorf, to replace the interim ventilation function previously served by the Schacht Dilsburg in the same district. The Literaturland Saar Heusweiler account states that Grube Ensdorf erected the Südschacht as its own Anlage near Niedersalbach once the advance of the Ensdorf field workings beneath Heusweiler required a dedicated ventilation exit closer to the Baufeld than the older Dilsburg shaft. The exact date of sinking is not stated in the consulted sources; Schacht Dilsburg was reactivated from 1965 and Schacht Holz (Göttelborn's Westfeldschacht) was sunk from 1912.

The Südschacht was operational in the final period of the Bergwerk Saar, for which the German Wikipedia article lists its function explicitly as ausziehender Wetterschacht, Walpershofen. The Bergwerk Saar was formed on 1 January 2004 from the merger of Bergwerk Warndt/Luisenthal and Bergwerk Ensdorf, and closed in June 2012 when coal production ended. With that closure the Südschacht's operational life ended.
