Site overview

The Mines de fer de Palmas are located in the commune of Palmas-d'Aveyron in the Aveyron department, Occitanie, a territory known to contain iron ore deposits since antiquity. The Aveyron department hosts multiple iron ore occurrences associated with its varied geological terrains, including hematite and spathic iron veins in schists and granites documented from the early nineteenth century. Palmas-d'Aveyron, situated in the valley of the Dourdou de Camarès, lies within a zone where such mineralisation has been recorded.

Site-specific records for the Mines de fer de Palmas — including concession dates, operator identity, shaft details, production records, closure date, and current condition — have not been recovered from the sources accessible during research. Consultation of the BRGM subsurface database and the Archives Départementales de l'Aveyron would be the appropriate route to recover a technical history for this site.

History

The commune of Palmas-d'Aveyron is situated in the southern Aveyron department in the valley of the Dourdou de Camarès, approximately twenty kilometres south-east of Millau. The Aveyron department is characterised by diverse geological terrains spanning Precambrian basement, Palaeozoic metamorphics, and Mesozoic sedimentary cover, several of which are associated with iron ore occurrences.

A geological study of metallic mineral deposits in the Aveyron published in the nineteenth century records the presence of hematite in almost all the metalliferous veins of the department, occurring either as gossan at surface or as the dominant metallic mineral in certain veins. Spathic iron (siderite) is recorded in the department as associated with other metallic minerals in veins rather than forming principal lodes on its own account. The southern Aveyron, including the area around Palmas, lies within a broader zone of polymetallic mineralisation associated with the Cabrières nappe and adjacent basement units.

The site name 'Mines de fer de Palmas' indicates the extraction of iron ore on the territory of Palmas-d'Aveyron. The concession history, operator details, dates of opening and closure, shaft or gallery configuration, production volumes, and current condition of the site are not recoverable from sources consulted. Consultation of the BRGM Base de Données du Sous-Sol, the Statistique de l'Industrie Minérale historical series, and the Archives Départementales de l'Aveyron would be necessary to establish a technical history for this site with confidence.
