Assessment

The record identifies this site as the surviving A-frame headgear over No. 3 shaft at the former Barony Colliery west of Auchinleck. The history is supported principally by the Historic Environment Scotland Category B designation, the linked national monument record, specialist Coal and Community research, company and National Archives catalogues, the Barony A Frame Trust and scholarly work on the site's preservation. The evidence establishes that the original shafts were developed from 1906, the first coal reached the surface in 1912, No. 3 shaft formed part of a reconstruction begun in 1937 and completed in 1949, and the surviving A-frame was erected over that shaft in 1954.

It also establishes the separate collapse of No. 2 shaft on 8 November 1962, the deaths of four men, the later provision of No. 4 shaft, closure in 1989 and the community-led restoration completed in 2007. Uncertainty remains over the exact opening year of the adjoining power station, with credible sources giving 1953 and 1957, and over the accessible primary documentation for the A-frame's manufacturer and the claim that only two examples of its type were built. Surviving-site classification

The surviving site comprises the original welded-steel A-frame headgear erected over Barony Colliery No. 3 shaft in 1954, together with later landscaping, interpretation and memorial features. It is classified as a headframe and an Isolated headframe because the winding houses, generating and treatment buildings and most other plant of the main colliery complex no longer survive around it. The A-frame itself is an original colliery structure, although it has undergone substantial conservation, while the surrounding heritage garden, memorials and visitor features are later additions.

The coal classification is supported by the statutory designation and specialist histories identifying Barony as a deep coal colliery. This assessment concerns the recorded No. 3 A-frame site and does not assume that no minor or detached remains survive elsewhere within the wider former colliery area.

Site overview

Barony Colliery was a deep coal mine west of Auchinleck in East Ayrshire. William Baird & Company began sinking the original shafts in 1906, and the first coal was brought to the surface in 1912. In 1937 a major reconstruction began, including the sinking of No. 3 shaft; the National Coal Board completed the programme in 1949 after nationalisation.

The welded-steel A-frame headgear now surviving at the site was erected over No. 3 shaft in 1954 as part of the colliery's modernisation. In 1958 the recorded workforce reached 1,695. On 8 November 1962 No. 2 shaft collapsed, entombing Henry Green, George Wade, Thomas Fyvie and John McNeil, whose bodies were never recovered.

The loss of the shaft led to a sustained campaign to keep Barony operating, and a detached No. 4 ventilation and emergency-winding shaft was provided in 1965. The colliery continued through increasingly difficult conditions before closing in 1989. The main complex was then largely demolished, leaving the No. 3 A-frame as its dominant surviving structure.

The community-led Barony A Frame Trust, established in 1997, raised about £1.3 million for conservation and landscaping. The restored memorial site was formally opened in January 2008.

The headgear stands in open ground on the edge of Auchinleck, where the surrounding landscape is now more mixed and developed, but the structure remains highly prominent and unmistakable.

History

Barony Colliery was developed on the coalfield west of Auchinleck to serve the Baird company's wider coal and iron interests in Ayrshire. Sinking of the original shafts began in 1906. Specialist research records that Nos. 1 and 2 were sunk between 1906 and 1910, while interpretation produced for the present heritage site identifies 1912 as the year in which the first coal was brought to the surface.

In 1931 the Baird and Dalmellington interests were combined as Bairds & Dalmellington Ltd. A major reconstruction of Barony began in 1937, including the sinking of No. 3 shaft. After nationalisation in 1947 the work was continued by the National Coal Board and completed in 1949. The reconstructed colliery was intended to maintain production in the Ayrshire coalfield and provide employment as other pits declined. In 1948 it employed 1,264 people and produced about 1,520 tons of coal a day.

The four-legged welded-steel A-frame headgear that now dominates the site was erected over No. 3 shaft in 1954. It carried four pulley wheels and served the shaft used for winding men and coal. Approximately 180 feet high, it is generally identified as the sole surviving British example of its distinctive structural type. An adjoining power station was also developed during the 1950s to burn slurry from the colliery washery, although surviving sources disagree over whether it opened in 1953 or 1957. The recorded colliery workforce reached its peak of 1,695 in 1958.

On 8 November 1962 No. 2 shaft collapsed. Four men, Henry Green, George Wade, Thomas Fyvie and John McNeil, were entombed and their bodies were never recovered. The collapse and failure of the No. 2 installation blocked access to the shaft, but it did not involve the A-frame over No. 3 shaft that survives today. The disaster placed the future of Barony in doubt and led to a sustained community, trade-union and political campaign to keep the colliery operating.

A detached No. 4 shaft was provided in 1965 for ventilation and emergency winding, allowing work to continue. During the 1970s and 1980s Barony faced difficult geological conditions, labour shortages and growing economic pressure. The adjoining power station closed and was demolished in 1983. Barony Colliery itself closed in 1989.

Barony Colliery was designated as a Category B listed building on 27 April 1990. The designation described the A-frame together with the winding houses, generating station, water-treatment works and other elements then surviving from the early and reconstructed phases of the mine. Most of the principal buildings of the main complex were subsequently demolished, leaving the No. 3 A-frame isolated in the cleared landscape.

The community-led Barony A Frame Trust was established in 1997 to save and restore the structure. With assistance from East Ayrshire Council and heritage funders, the trust raised about £1.3 million. By 2007 remedial work to the A-frame and major landscaping of the surrounding site had been completed. The restored site was formally opened by Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay, in January 2008. The original headgear now stands within a landscaped public memorial containing interpretation of the colliery, its workforce and the men who lost their lives there.
